Scoliosis and Schroth Therapy

When I was a younger therapist I was saddened by the lack of treatment options for idiopathic adolescent scoliosis. I looked to learn more and was lucky enough to learn about the Schroth Method. I continued to received a specialist certification as a Schroth Scoliosis Therapist and have found it invaluable in my practice over the years. Whether it's in the treatment of an young teen hoping to use as an adjunct with bracing, or as ancillary finding in some of my pelvic health patients, I have been able to integrate the principles of the Schroth method with notable improvement in quality of life for the people with scoliosis.

What is the Schroth Method?

The Schroth Method is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to address the unique challenges of scoliosis. It focuses on three-dimensional corrective exercises that target the specific curvature of each individual's spine. By teaching patients to actively engage their muscles and improve their posture, the Schroth Method can help to:

  • Reduce the severity of the spinal curve: By using specific exercises and techniques, patients can learn to "de-rotate" their spine and improve its alignment.

  • Improve lung function: Scoliosis can restrict lung capacity. The Schroth Method can help to improve breathing patterns and increase lung function.

  • Reduce pain: By addressing muscle imbalances and improving posture, the Schroth Method can help to alleviate pain associated with scoliosis.

  • Enhance self-image: The Schroth Method can help patients to feel more confident about their appearance and overall well-being.
